Loveless "Archer" Chute Fighter by Marcus Lin | Custom Alliance #20

There is no doubt that in the world of handmade knives there was no bigger influencer than Robert W. Loveless. Loveless was the pioneer of handmade high-performance knives from modern materials that looked as good as they worked.  His legendary designs like the drop point hunter, sub-hilt fighter, chute knife and his embrace of high-performance steel and handle materials were the genesis of the current industry of handmade custom cutlery across the world. Loveless was an American institution who freely trained a multitude of young makers in his signature rakish styling and build techniques up until his death in 2010. We wanted to offer a handmade knife of the highest quality that honored Loveless’s life and selected one of his most recognizable designs, the Chute Knife, along with a maker with first-hand knowledge of how the Loveless shop crafted their legendary blades right down to the thread used in the leather sheath.
The “Archer” Chute Knife is one of Loveless’s most enduring tactical designs.  Designed by Vietnam-era CIA operative and weapons expert Harry Archer as an all-around tactical fixed blade, the Loveless crafted “Archer” Chute Knife was conceptualized in battle and further refined by the master.  Archer envisioned a combat knife of a portable, practical size to go along with the jungle machete in his survival kit.  The machete was to be used for major work and the chute was reserved for fine work, fieldcraft and self defense.  Its double edge would be effective for cutting a suspended paratroop out of his parachute cord-hence the name.  Not too big, not too small-the “Archer” Chute Knife is just right.

This splendid rendition of an Archer inspired, Loveless designed Chute knife is crafted with the same attention to detail and fit and finish that Loveless incorporated in his knives.  California Redwood Burl was chosen to honor the state that Loveless called home and created his most significant knives.  Hidden pins were also selected to showcase the wood’s natural beauty.  The high polished ATS-34 blade is deeply hollow ground and mirror polished just like a Loveless would be as he believed the high polish resisted corrosion better, cleaned easier and sliced more efficiently than subdued blades. A double guard of stainless steel and fine leather sheath by the maker are the finishing touches to an exceptional heirloom quality knife.  Limited to 10 serialized pieces.
